My name is Stash Merritt and I am the Modified Wrestling coach here at Victor. If your athlete is not currently planning on trying out for a winter sport, I would encourage you to have them take a look at wrestling. If they are trying out for another sport and if for some reason they do not make their team, I would also encourage them to try wrestling.
Wrestling is a sport that focuses on improving strength, balance, coordination, and most importantly, individual accountability. Everyone that is on the team is a "starter" and we do not cut. Our season starts on 12/2 and ends on 2/1. Once the season starts we have 2 - 3 matches a week, with some events on Saturday mornings. We do not compete or practice over break and are considerate and flexible with the busy schedules of our athletes.
On Monday 12/2 I will meet the team at the end of sports study hall to bring them to my classroom. Practice will end at 5:00pm in the JH Gym. All athletes interested should come prepared for the first day of practice with a clean t-shirt and pair of shorts free of metal zippers. Wrestling shoes will eventually be required, but are not for the first few weeks.
